John Bakker

Professor of Art
Director, Seerveld Gallery

John Bakker received his MFA in painting from Michigan State University in 1982, the year he came to Trinity. By 1985 his work was represented by Marianne Deson Gallery, one of Chicago's most influential galleries. In the 80s his work was included in exhibitions representing Chicago. His work has been included in significant private, corporate and public collections. Notably, he has received two major commissions from the City of Chicago's Office of Public Art.

Except for minor interruptions, he has chaired the department since his arrival. He directed the gallery from 1982 through 2007. He designed the art department's curriculum, the advising system and the assessment process. He led the department's planning effort on the new Art and Communication Center which opened to great reviews in 2008. One reviewer said, "This is a building that any college would envy. It is superb."

In 1995 Bakker volunteered as an instructor at the Hillcrest School in Jos, Nigeria.

When it comes to department ping pong, Bakker owns the table.
